Later this summer, I'll be preaching a series of sermons about those things we find most annoying about Christians. At first, I thought I would just spend five weeks hashing over my personal pet peeves. But, of course, this series isn't all about me, its about what makes you itch. So, let me know - what irritates you about Christians? I want to hear from both believers and pagans. What rubs you the wrong way? You can click on comments below this posting to leave me a message.
Thanks!

ReplyDeleteOkay, I get these. But what I'm after in this series are things like these:
ReplyDeleteWhen Christians go out to eat on Sundays and are lousy tippers.
Christians who think everyone should be just like them, and those who are not aren't real Christians.
Does that help?
Thanks!
I get annoyed at "christian-ese". A local church recently posted on the sign in their front yard:
ReplyDelete"Draw nigh unto Him and He shall draw nigh unto thee"
Now will the drivers who need that message most understand that? I think they get more out of "What's missing from Ch ch?"
And a few of those beloved hymns? There are words there that are hard enough to pronounce, let alone understand. We need to remember when speaking to someone about sanctification and atonement that simple is good. $5 words may cost more than they're worth.
I get annoyed when Christians do things or say things to "show off" that they are a christian. Or similarly, rappers or other artests who say, "First and formost I'd like to thank God for everything. I wouldn't be here without him" yet they do not live for him except when they are receiving an award.
ReplyDeleteThere is a TV ad here in Cincy for a Christian Fianance place. There ad is aweful. The person singing can't sing. And on top of that the song she's singing is cheesey. Christians need to do things with quality. It annoys me that Christian things are Cheesey...it give us a bad rap.
JP and Chloe, I would love to see acopy of that ad. Do you think you could have your VCR ready to go some night and catch it for me?
ReplyDeleteThanks
I have issues with business's that are quick to let you know that they are Christian owned and operated. Not with the fact that they are Christian but that they seem to use it as a selling tool. While I'm sure that there are many fine business owners that are very careful to insure that they conduct business in manner within God's wishes but nearly every business that I've encountered that labels themselves, "Christian owned and operated" has let me down. Their true beliefs and standards come through when they become upset, or when it comes time to pay their bills. It's almost as if it's a mask, that if they label themselves Christian people will be blind to the little things that seem to fullfill these folks in some way that may not be entirely ethical. It causes "Christian" to become a label rather than proclomation of faith.

It is irritating to me when Christians do not take the time to get to know someone when trying to bring them to Christ. There are different approaches for different personality types. We are suppose to be caring but sometimes we do not take the time to care enough on a personal level. We must remember that there are plenty of people searching that believe they have to change first to become a Christian. We need to be able to identify these types so we can use the right approach. If we use the wrong approach all we are doing is confirming the belief that one must change first before becoming a follower of Christ.
ReplyDeleteThe most irritating things about christians is that they are always putting a verse out of the bible, to tell someone that they are doing something wrong.
